![]() The terms were popularized in science fiction culture via the 1999 film The Matrix. And for a more introspective movie, it makes sense that Neo is wrestling with the red pill/blue pill choice more than he ever did in previous Matrix movies. The term red pill and its opposite, blue pill, are pop culture terms that have become a common symbol for the choice between the blissful ignorance of illusion (blue) and embracing the sometimes painful truth of reality (red). The red pill Keanu Reeves is referring to is a significant part of the Matrix quadrilogy as that was what set the ball rolling in Lilly and Lana Wachowski’s 1999 release. The Matrix Resurrections seems to be a more personal story for Neo, rather than a sci-fi war for the fate of the human race. This would explain why Neo is faced with red and blue at every turn - a constant reminder of the paths he can take, and the temptations lying one way or another. ![]() Whereas the original trilogy saw Neo make his choice early, The Matrix Resurrections could find Keanu Reeves taking longer to weigh up his options. Yahya Abdul-Mateen's character suggests Neo is stuck inside the Matrix because he refuses to abandon Trinity, while the therapist proves "Thomas" is making great effort to silence his inner memories. An initial trailer for Matrix Resurrections hid much of the sequels plot, but red and blue pills are prominent throughout. With so much of The Matrix Resurrections' trailer taking place inside the simulation, the struggle this time seems to be between the real and digital. The red pill that Neo ends up taking is similar to what estrogen pills, used for hormone replacement therapy, looked like in the nineties. The blue pill would take Neo back to his normal life, and the red pill would show him how deep the rabbit hole goes (IE: Wake him up from the Matrix and show him the real world with all the humans in their storage pods. ![]() In the original trilogy, Neo's struggle was a man vs. machine affair. The blue pill will allow him to continue in ignorance. In The Matrix, Neo is offered a choice between a red and a blue pill in an iconic moment. Rather than referring to a choice, like the one Morpheus offered to Neo, the phrase was recast as a verb. Did you just take both pills refers to a 2022 meme template based on a scene in the movie The Matrix in which Morpheus offers Neo the choice between the red and blue pills. The red and blue pills might also tell us something about The Matrix Resurrections' maze-like plot. The red pill became synonymous with Trump supporters’ message to establishment politics.
